St Grizzle’s School For Girls, Goats And Random Boys – Book Review

St Grizzle’s school for girl, goats and random boys is written by Karen McCombie and Illustrated by Becka Moor. Published earlier this year by Stripes (An Imprint of Little Tiger Group) is available in paperback for £5.99. Perfect for children aged 7-9 years St Grizzle’s is a hilariously quirky book.

St Grizzle’s Series

St Grizzle's

Eva loves to read books that are funny and a bit quirky and she is currently loving books based around schools. I remember enjoying similar books at her age. We’ve been hunting out new series for her and we were sent St Grizzle’s school for girls, goats and random boys. The title caught Eva’s eye because it had such a silly name.

As soon as Eva had started reading she was giggling away. The main character, Dani is packed off to a strict girls boarding school while her mum heads off to the Antarctic to study penguins bums! St Grizelda’s school for girls turns out to have had a drastic change of teaching style. Dani and her mum realise the school is in chaos with no rules, craziness and a goat!?

Dani feels homesick but has to wait for her mum to make alternative arrangements. Whilst she waits the madness begins to warm Dani’s heart. The quirky characters throughout the story kept giggling throughout the story. She loved Dani and after reading the teaser for the second book in the series she couldn’t wait to read more! She loved the illustrations throughout the book making sure to show me each one. Luckily I have a copy of the second book St Grizzle’s school for girls, ghosts and runaway grannies for her to review next week. Check back to see what Eva thinks of the next book and to find out more yourself!

Do you know a child that would love this book too?

Vlad The World’s Worst Vampire – Book Review

Eva has been reading Vlad The World’s Worst Vampire this week. Written by Anna Wilson and illustrated by Kathryn Durst, Vlad The World’s Worst Vampire is available in paperback for (RRP) £5.99 and perfect for 7-9 year olds. The first book of a brand-new illustrated series, featuring fangtastic characters & batty humour, Vlad tries to find where he belongs.

Vlad World's Worst Vampire

Vlad The World’s Worst Vampire

We recently discovered books published by Stripes in the library, Stripes is an imprint of Little Tiger Group, our favourite publisher! Eva decided she wants to work her way through books published by Stripes. I have to admit they seem rather funny and quirky, perfect for her. Seeing Eva so excited about reading is fantastic and she was ecstatic to receive Vlad The World’s Worst Vampire.

Vlad is the youngest member of the Impaler family, the bravest vampires ever! Vlad isn’t that brave though, he’s even scared of the dark, much to his parents disappointment.  Wanting to make friends Vlad decides Human school is the best place to make friends. With his pet bat Flit Vlad heads off to Human school in search of friendships, trying his best to keep his true identity a secret!

From the very first page you can tell this will be a hilarious book to sink your teeth into. Anna Wilsons fantastic humour makes this book the perfect read! We will definitely be keeping an eye out for the rest of the series as they are published.

Eva’s Thoughts

I liked Vlad the worlds worst vampire because he pretended to be a human but was actually a vampire! He pretended to be a human because he wanted to go to human school. After reading about Jollywood academy – The best school in the world, Vlad decides he prefers the sound human school. His family isn’t too happy about it though! It is such a funny book to read.

Rainbow – My Sunday Photo

I spotted this rainbow earlier in the week & was glad to finally capture something & join in with #MySundayPhoto again. It’s been a busy few weeks and I’ve not had much time to take photo’s! Looking through my camera roll was pretty boring this week in all honesty. The girls pepper plants are the most exciting thing I’ve captured! I was quite relieved to get a shot of this gorgeous rainbow.

Rainbow

Rainbow

After a very stressful week, this rainbow brightened up the sky and my mood. Perhaps sorting a new washing machine may have had something to do with it. I’ve felt a bit more positive since taking this photo though. I realised is that whilst I feel trapped in this flat I also have some stunning views at times!

I love rainbows and we are quite lucky to spot so many from our 11th floor flat. We really do have a great view for things like that. I love looking out of the window and often wander between the kitchen and living room windows. It’s quite nice watching the weather, the way the clouds move and beautiful sights such as rainbows, fly-by’s and helicopters so close. I guess there are some perks to living up so high.

What have you captured this week?

Tackling My Mental Health With Thrive: Feel Stress Free

I’m tackling my mental health with Thrive: Feel Stress Free, an app created to help gradually build resilience to and manage stress. Something I am struggling with immensely lately. Thrive is also designed to help with anxiety and mild depression which I also struggle with.Thrive

I recently had a medication review which didn’t go too well. I saw Dr who clearly didn’t read my notes and his comments left me feeling rubbish. Because of this my mental health has spiralled out of control and I’ve struggled to cope lately. A Dr trying to change my medication without reading my notes ( I figured this as he asked as I was leaving if I’ve been to the pain clinic yet instead of ‘just taking medication’!) has left me feeling even more messed up than before! I avoided medication for a good 5 years when I obviously needed it, I’ve tried everything I can & given in and accepted medication just to get that kind of reaction. That’s probably a whole other post though!

I have decided I will try my best to take my mental health into my own hands and hopefully Thrive can help with that. I will be trying out the app and sharing how I get on with it in a few weeks time.

What Is Thrive?

Thrive teaches clinically proven techniques such as mindfulness and CBT. I will be trying the app out over the next month to try and manage my stress and anxiety as I am really struggling again lately. A confidential wellbeing app, Thrive helps build resilience, prevent and manage stress, anxiety and other common mental health conditions. Thrive is designed to help de-stress I just 5 minutes. I hope this is the case for me!

Subscription Costs

The Thrive app is available on all Android and Apple devices. 3 different subscription packages are available.

Monthly –  £5.99

Quarterly – £14.97 for 3months of unlimited access. That’s just £4.99 a month!

Yearly  – £47.88  a year brings the cost down to £3.99 a month.

How Does It Work?

There are several parts to the Thrive app. Each section focuses on one area but the app considers all area’s when processing results & giving advice. Thrive learns more about you as you use it which allows the app to give better suited advice.

Mood

Mood Meter

The Thrive app begins by asking questions and tracking them on the Mood Meter. Every day you answer the questions which allows the app to assess your current issues. With this information the app can provide useful results to help you work on those issues. Over time the app learns more about you allowing it to advise you better each time.

Thrive- Words of encouragement

Thought Trainer

The CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) based thought trainers is designed to help re-frame negative thoughts. This is something I really need to work on myself and I’m keen to see if I can see the positives in the negatives. The mood meter tracks everything and stores it in the Progress section of the app. The thought trainer slowly personalises itself to your

self suggestion

Relaxation Techniques

Thrive uses four relaxation techniques – calm breathing, meditation, deep muscle relaxation and progressive relaxation. You may find certain techniques may work better for you than others. Try them all to see which works best for you. There’s a range of sessions varying in duration & situation. You can select what works best for you.

Wellbeing Guides

There’s a selection of wellbeing guides available on Thrive. The guides help understand and support you through situations like trouble sleeping, money worries, loss of a loved one, weight worries and more.

Zen Garden

This is my favourite part of the app already. The Zen garden allows you to get creative and design your own peaceful garden.  Creating a peaceful Zen garden helps keep your mind off stress. I’ve already found raking and making patterns quite peaceful.

Zen Garden

Message in a Bottle

Message in a bottle lets you share a completely confidential and anonymous message in a bottle with words of encouragement. Everyone needs a few words of encouragement at times!

Across all of these different area’s the app learns about you and can tell you where you need help. As you can see below my anxiety is the main issue which I’m hoping Thrive can help me with. Don’t forget to check back in a week or 2 to see how I get on!

Lace Shell Edged Shawl Crochet Project – Complete

I’ve been working on a Lace Shell Edged Shawl since my birthday after some good friends spoilt me with crochet supplies! I received a handy box full of purple sparkly wool, hooks, a magazine & beginners crochet guide. I was over the moon and still am!

A box of treats!

Crochet goodies

Anyone that knows me will know I absolutely love crochet! I taught myself slowly over the last few year after finding knitting difficult with 2 children running around. Crochet is much easier to pick up & put down when I have spare time. My confidence has grown loads and I’ve made some lovely items that I’m quite proud of. I’ve crocheted several items now including bags, a flower heart wreath, dolls clothes, blankets for Eva and Izzy, scarves and more! I really enjoy crochet, it helps with my anxiety & depression too so this was the perfect birthday present!

I love seeing the girls with their blankets I made for them 😍

Lace Shell Edged Shawl

With plenty of purple wool, I sat and looked through the magazines to find myself a nice project. I found a pattern for a gorgeous lace edged shawl so I instantly got to work on a purple one for myself! The crochet beginners guide has a lovely pattern which I decided to adapt slightly using a different sized hook. I won’t deny I only changed the pattern so I could use my lovely new 3mm purple hook instead of a 5mm one!

Lace shell edged Shawl

Using the Crochet Beginners guide I finally got the hang of a magic ring which will be useful in so many projects. I’ve also recently taught myself how to do a standing crochet stitch, great for hiding any mistakes haha!

My lace shell edged shawl grew quite quickly considering the hook size difference. The shawl took longer than planned but I’m still pleased I managed it in a month! We’ve had a busy few weeks, a surprise trip to Southend pier, Izzy being poorly and Eva going back to school . Somehow I have still managed to sneak in a few rows here and there.

Finally finished!

The design itself is quite simple but it has a lace shell edging which is nice and a little different to the shell edging on Izzy’s crochet blanket I recently made her. I madea few mistakes so had to frog several rows throughout but I eventually got there!

My shawl is finally finished! Still need to wash and block it but YAY!

A post shared by Ember (@relentlesslypurple) on

One of the magazines came with a shawl pin to use too. Now I’ve learnt more stitches and tricks my ‘to make’ list is growing quickly! With 5 more balls of purple to use I’m on the hunt for another little project haha!

What do you think of the shawl? What would you make if you had plenty of wool to use?

Weekend Box – Snazaroo Face Paints

Weekend Box have teamed up with Snazaroo and created a fantastic face paints box. Eva loves Weekend Boxes, you may remember she reviewed some boxes last year and had her photo featured on Facebook too! We love subscription boxes that keep us entertained over the weekend. Weekend Boxes are suitable for 4-9 years. This fabulous mini box is just £2.99!

Weekend Snazaroo Box

Of course Eva was extremely excited to discover a Weekend Box addressed to her this week and couldn’t wait to see what was inside and start having some creative fun!

Inside The Weekend Box

Weekend Box

Eva still loves the characters on the box and how it is packaged, she loves that she can open the box and read about the animals before finally discovering what’s actually inside the box. She remember the cute woodland characters from last year and loves Hattie the Hedgehog.

Weekend Box Snazaroo

Snazaroo Face Paints!

As you can see Eva was really excited to discover her Weekend Box had Snazaroo face paints inside! Snazaroo face paints are suitable from 3 years. They are so easy to use, just add water, even Izzy joined in and had a go. Snazaroo face paints are made in the UK, they are skin friendly, fragrance and paraben free and are formulated from premium cosmetic ingredients to be gentle on skin. We all have sensitive skin, cheap face paints causes rashes but we have no problems at all with Snazaroo face paints.

With 2 fun Snazaroo face painting kits to use Eva couldn’t wait to start using them. Eva loved the Birthday party face paint stamp kit. She especially loved the cupcake and face stamps so we started with those.

Cupcake Face Paint

We tried out the mini face paint kit next and decided to follow the directions on the box to see if it was as simple as it looks. We need a little more practice but Eva loved the end result! The 3 step guide was so easy to follow and Snazaroo have more guides online.

The Snazaroo Weekend Box is so much fun and something we can use again. You can invite some friends round & paint all their faces as there is plenty of paint in those kits! This is definitely something we would recommend as it kept us busy for quite some time. Of course we then had 2 clowns running around causing havoc in the flat haha!

Because Snazaroo face paints are water based they are so easy to clean off. Using wet wipes we had clean faces again in minutes! We love the mini kit so much! There are five vibrant themes available – Summer, Carnival, Halloween, Christmas and Easter. The colourful summer packs include a fun Festive Mask (made up of bright pink, white and royal blue) and a Jester (featuring grass green, white and purple).

Do you love the look of the Snazaroo Weekend Box too?

Celebrating International Literacy Day 2017 With Viking Direct

I am celebrating International Literacy Day 2017 with Viking Direct. To help me create a post for international literacy day Viking Direct provided me with a box full of supplies!

International literacy day with viking direct

Unesco

In 1946 International literacy day was founded by Unesco. They have continued to spread awareness and make great efforts to help people around the world access literacy for 51 years. There are still 750 million adults and 264 million out-of school children lacking basic literacy skills. This desperately needs to be changed. Everyone deserves to be taught literacy.

UNESCO has been at the forefront of global literacy efforts since 1946, advancing the vision of a literate world for all. It views acquiring and improving literacy skills throughout life as an intrinsic part of the right to education. The “multiplier effect” of literacy empowers people, enables them to participate fully in society and contributes to improve livelihoods.

 Speech Bubble Bookmarks

International Literacy Day 2017

I support international literacy day because everyone deserves to be literate. Literacy gives us access to endless amounts of information, skills and outlets. It is more than just education, literacy is a basic human right. Being literate gives us the ability to absorb and interpret information. Literacy isn’t just the ability to read, write and count, it helps us solve problems. Being literate fires up our imaginations and allows us to express ourselves creatively.

Literacy at home

Knowing the importance of literacy the Mr and I have always tried to encourage the girls to learn anyway we can.

Dr. Seuss quote

As book lovers, we love using our local library to borrow books, a chance to socialise with other children whilst encouraging a love of literature. Using the item’s sent by Viking I have designed a new book bag to take with us to the library.

Lewis Carroll Quote

Izzy loves Dr. Seuss and Eva is a big fan of Alice in wonderland and is often running around shouting quotes from the book! Being literate opens us to a world of adventure, creativity, and knowledge and I feel these quotes were fitting.

How literacy benefits me

Growing up with access to literacy have given me the opportunity to blog which has been a fantastic outlet for me. Blogging has shown me other’s are going through exactly the same as me. Reading posts written by others shows me they feel the same and face similar challenges. I know I’m not alone.

International Literacy Day 2017

Without literacy I would severely struggle to connect with anyone. Everyone deserves a chance to express themselves and connect with like-minded people. We are in a digital age which makes literacy a key skill that everyone deserves access to.
